BIO

What drives me as a medical illustrator is life-long learning and solving puzzles. Each subject I illustrate is an audience-specific composition made of many separate pieces of visual information. My responsibility is to carefully organize the information into a clear visual hierarchy using elements of design such as scale, shape, form, value, color, contrast, and texture. My goal is to establish a purposeful relationship between each part, while ensuring they are in service of the story being told. The result is successful if it is accurate, cohesive, clear, dynamic, and most importantly…remembered.

I feel tremendously grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the many brilliant physicians, scientists, and decision makers in healthcare and health policy in my role as a medical illustrator. I take great pride in helping guide them through the creative process by prioritizing the needs of their intended audience, while offering counsel in regards to the balance of information quantity and complexity.

Outside of illustrating for JAMA, I enjoy picking bluegrass tunes on my guitar, growing my competency and confidence as a sailor, and trying to keep pace with my beautiful wife, Elizabeth, while hiking the mountains of New England and beyond. I am originally from the quirky midwestern hamlet of Madison, Wisconsin.
